In the spring of 1973, 2 young women, parents, started a softball league in Liverpool NY. These two women led the way: gathering volunteers to coach, find parks to play in, purchase bases, equipment, etc... The players learned more than the sport of softball; they learned how to work together, to have patience, sportsmanship and respect. The youth learned about softball as well as life skills.
Fast forward a couple of decades later and in 1997, another group of dedicated parents and softball club members rallied together their skills, energy and resources to form “home base” of sorts: to play ball in one location versus traveling all over the Liverpool and CNY area. The league was incorporated in 1997 and has been known as the Liverpool Girls Softball League ever since.
Now in 2017, LGSL continues to pursue the same goals as were established 44 years ago. Parents and volunteers work year round in an effort to maintain, as well as improve the fields, sport and opportunities. LGSL offers both slow pitch and fast pitch to girls’ ages 5 through 19. It’s a testament to the love of the LGSL, and Softball, when ‘retired players’ come back to coach or bring their own childern into the league and carry on the softball tradition
Many thanks to each person for the last 44 years that support softball; look forward to another 44 years of positive growth in the sport of softball.
